Your Sun, My Sun

I very much dislike
the way you look

Beside me
Behind me
Through me

Never at me

I understand—it feels

Bold
Dangerous
Unnecessary

To look directly into the sun

You can close your eyes, turn your back,
and still feel the place she burns from

When day’s end inevitably comes,
you won’t need to meet her gaze
to know she will rise again

It’s what she always does

Day in
Day out

Until her light begins to fade

It will, of course—
All suns must set in the end

When the light she carried has nothing left for you,
Will you sit and wait, expecting it to rise again?
Will you shiver in the chill of a sunless day?

Will you remember how she once warmed you?

Look at her, dear one
Put your eyes on her eyes
See her
Let the light she gives
imprint itself on you

Before it is gone
